The Scientific and Technical Library of Gorno-Altaisk State University (STL of GASU) was founded in 1949, concurrently with the foundation of the teacher's institute in Gorno-Altaisk. It was created to house the collection of Moscow State Teacher Training College named after K.Libkneht, which was evacuated during the Great Patriotic War. It donated almost 8 thousand various editions to the new institute. This fund contained unique historical, scientific, and reference books as well as textbooks. Thanks to this gift, the library is the owner of a collection of rare books, dating from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, which is actively used by students, post-graduate students and teachers in the research work of the university.
Today the GASU library is a modern automated division providing access to local and foreign printed and electronic resources. The use of the Integrated Library System (ILS) has allowed the automation of processes connected with the acquisition of funds, cataloguing of arriving documents and service of readers. The library actively creates its own electronic resources: the electronic catalogue, bibliographic databases, and full-text electronic collections on various subjects. The STL of GASU actively cooperates with many aggregators of electronic resources, including "University library online," IQLib, Elibrary, etc.
Along with the introduction of computer technologies and the advanced experience of other college libraries, the GASU library uses traditional forms and methods in its work. Teachers and students enjoy open viewings, literature reviews, and books exhibitions. The scientific and practical conferences that are held at the university are accompanied by the demonstration of editions concerning the topics in discussion. These editions are available in the library.
The book fund of the STL of GASU grows every year. Today it consists of over 386,800 books. The address: Lenin street, 9
