The Altai Republic enjoys the image of one of the most ecologically clean regions of Russia. It is famous for its various landscapes where you can find glaciers, highland tundra, steppes, taiga, clear lakes and white-water rivers. More than 20% of its territory is protected and in 1998 the Altai reserves were included into the World Heritage List. The historical and cultural heritage of the region is extremely rich - one of the routes of the Great Silk Road crossed it. Many nations and ethnic groups claim the Altai to be the place of their origin. Archaeological finds from Scythian barrows are represented in many museums including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. The work in the Altai might be of great interest for scientists in different fields of research - geography, geology, zoology, biology, archaeology, linguistics, etc.
The Gorno-Altaisk University has established ties with the universities of the neighbouring regions - Tomsk, Barnaul, and Novosibirsk. At the same time the University develops its international contacts and it signed agreements on collaboration with the Ulan-Bator University (Hovdo branch, Mongolia), the University of Northern British Columbia (Canada), the Free University of Brussels and the Gent University (Belgium), the University of Kansas , Kansas State University, Haskell Indian Nations University (USA) and Ecole Polytechnique (France).
